New to Laupahoehoe and just saw my first cane spider this morning attached to the back screen door. Huge & scary looking but beautiful too. Left her to her business. I hope she sticks around!

I had a cane spider hiding under my towel rack in the bathroom. She's carrying around an egg sac...looked like a round piece of styrofoam!! It was pretty interesting, once I got over the shock of a spider hiding under my towel. We leave them alone; I prefer them to be around the house eating those little german cockroaches and whatever else they want to consume...one of them adopted my son's shoe at night for a couple of days, and then went elsewhere. (We're in Papa'aloa, right next door to Laupahoehoe).

I just found a small one in my house in Volcano. Really timid, cute little fella; now has a new home outside in the bushes.

Well, I'm on the north shore of Oahu and I just met one in my apartment. I went to get a glass to scoop him up in and when I turned around I couldn't find him or her anywhere. I guess I have a new roommate. hmmm

Greeted me in the kitchen sink this morning..in kapaa Kauai. Last saw one at our wedding 15 years ago. Startled me..trying not to be fearful.. Know she is good for house..eats roaches and other bugs..its afternoon and my heart is still beating fast...I awoke my husband this morning..he caught the cane spider in a Starbucks cup and relocated her to the outside. I am trying to overcome irrational fear of cane spider

Hey Phyllis! How did you live 15 years in Kapa'a and only encounter one cane spider? I only lived there for 14 years, but saw several. I didn't really overcome that fear - just because they're so huge - until I moved to Molokai and watched one get rid of a B52 cockroach. I like the B52s even less than I did cane spiders. I now call all our cane spiders "Cane," and talk to them, just to let them know they're welcome here - and to make suggestions about where they might find the biggest roaches. 😜

Has anyone ever heard of coming across a huntsman spider in Arizona? Because I kept getting spiders that have the crab looking legs and small butt (like the males) at my moms trailer in Arizona.

They are not venomous. People say they can bite if attacked or cornered and terrified, but I find that hard to believe. We have so many here it's ridiculous. My cat that was a gecko and spider hunter passed, but she was merciless to them. I often saw them missing legs, the ones that got away (for how long though? poor things). I usually leave them be, but have caught them in bare hands to move them rather than leave them to get killed by someone who was going to (ironically out of fear) kill the poor spider. (I do the same with bees.) I do it slowly and very calmly. That helps. But I do prefer to use a container to gently catch them to take them outside on occasions it seems best for the situation.

I forgot to mention that one walked across my face while I was sleeping once (I'm an extremely light sleeper) and woke me. Such distinctive sensation. I have lived with them long enough to have zero doubt that was what I felt. Hunting the bugs I don't want around, and so I went back to sleep. No biggie. I used to tell my son that the only real harm that can come is from people panicking and freaking out and hurting themselves. LOL Seems that in some parts the spiders jump towards people. Dunno if they are smart, or comedians. Maybe they think it's funny to see the dangerous giants flinch and make funny noises, or perhaps they have figured out it can save their lives sometimes to scare people back, then make a run for cover or otherwise out of reach. Heh.

Cane spiders can bite, but they only do so in self-defense or when they are extremely provoked. They are venomous so their small bites are quite painful and can cause a mild headache and swelling for a few hours.

I had a cane spider in my bathroom with an egg sac. I thought it was a piece of soap. She was beautiful and was allowed to roam freely. We always knew her as she only had 7 legs. Oh, and, she was huge!

Thanks for blogging! I just killed a brown spider and wanted to identify it. I don't usually kill insects, but thought it might be a brown recluse. Figured I'd swat it and identify it later.

The mediterranean recluse (nearly identical to the brown recluse/violin) does have a few niche populations in the islands now, but they are tiny spiders (approx 5/16th of an inch grown) and look nothing like the cane spiders. The juvenile cane spiders have a very distinctive look and appear very much like the adults, only smaller. If you are afraid of venomous biters, get to know how to ID the black and brown widows (they are common and have a very unpleasant venom), and the unlikely to ever encounter recluse. Don;t use Google images because they are not reliable. It's not difficult to locate a few websites with accurate information. Choose academics, not the silly freaked out tourist guy who drew highly specious conclusions without any proof or reasonable evidence for his speculations about cane spiders.

Im on the north shore of Oahu also. Just stumbled into one large male in my bathroom. Went back to fetch my phone to take a picture. Wanted to find out more about it before I went ahead and killed it or something. Now I learned it's a large male and eats those pest roaches.. happy to have him. Turn off the light and left him be.. just don't crawl on my face when I'm sleeping!!!

Oh my god, I love that I saw your post! I'm a very light sleeper and woke one night last year to the extremely distinctive feel of what had to be a big one walk straight across my face while on the prowl and hunting for the bugs I don't want. I went right back to sleep. I'm amazed. The years have calmed me down. I don't kill centipedes or spiders and they have been good to me. May it always be so. lol Aloha

Maile Hi. Just reaching out because and this may be a silly question but are finding cane spiders gonna be an issue if I were to move to Honolulu opposed to living in more isolated areas or other islands. As moving to Honolulu is something I am considering doing in the near future and wasn't sure if concrete and buildings keep them away

What is the difference in appearance size color etc... between the brown recluse and the brown cane spider... how to identify them...

The brown violin relative we have here (very rare) is a tiny spider (approx 5/16 th of an inch fully grown) and looks nothing like the cane spider juveniles, which look exactly like the adult cane spiders, only small. Distinctive walk, and stance they have. If you see a spider cruising in your house, chances are its a cane spider. The recluse is more of a yellowish hue, far more reclusive in habits, and does have the visible violin on top. Use google wisely and find a reputable academic site to get familiar. There are several with good info-- not Google images --they'll show you pics of many different species when you search for the recluse.

Cane spiders are FAST. They don't bite humans and I'm happy to have one in my house. You will rarely see them but can be startling when you do. Please don't kill these WONDERFUL creatures.

I salute you hardened soldiers...I have arachnophobia and my first instinct is to scream and yell for someone to kill it. I've had numerous encounters with cane spiders while living in Pa'auhau on the Big island. Wish I could let them live in peace in my house but I just couldn't. Now I'm in Arizona and faarrrr from those scary but gentle giants lol

Hi. So, I have a beautiful, LARGE female in my car. I’m on Maui. I must’ve picked her up in Kahakaloa, and saw her when I got back to town. I haven’t driven for 2 days now, and I want her to live; and I’m also super scared she will terrify me while I’m driving.

So we found one in Washington state, it was in a shipping container from Hawaii filled with garden supplies, sadly we did end up killing the spider. Which probably is a good thing and a bad thing all at the same time, we don’t need to be coming invasive species over here, but I also feel bad for killing a spider that normally is non-aggressive :(

I am visiting my daughter in Honolulu, she is having a baby any day I found one in the bathroom . Scared me so much , I have never in my life seen a spider that big . My son in law came to my room and looked for it for me, but couldn’t find it , he told me it wouldn’t hurt me and to call him I see it again. I looked it up and after reading about it, I will not kill it now but I’m still scared and can’t go to sleep. .

My question is I am thinking of visiting or moving to Honolulu. Are cane spiders as big a problem in the city living in an apartment or condo as they are in more remote areas or the other outlying island? Thanks.

I was sitting at a restaurant patio on my. I’d been admiring a big dragonfly perched on the water fountain. I looked away to sip some orange juice; when I looked back, a badass like this had a hold of the dragonfly’s head.

Found the almost-translucent, white,spider-webbed,ovid eggsack untended in my fenced backyard and tossed it over the fence into the natural area. Days before found the biggest brown spider I have ever seen inside my patio and put a glass over it and got under it with a paper plate and put it outside in the field. He was big around as a silver dollar including his long brown legs. Do you think the egg sack belongs to that spider?

Aloha for blogging about this eight legged friend... We came home to find "one big brown spider" in our bathtub. And with your excellent description and pictures we were able to identify it as the male of the species. I wouldn't want to see the female as this guy is 2 3/4 in. outstretched. Mahalo nui for the education.

Love these posts! This site helped me quickly identify the cane spider I saw last night, a few feet from where I was going to sleep in my friends' "coffee shack". Slightly alarming! Thought about going inside the big house to sleep, then decided the spider has probably been there all along unnoticed, and not to worry. Thanks for your great information.
